Happy first day of Spring, many thoughts go through my mind as I think about spring. It is normally triggered by the adjusting of our clocks for most people in the US. We call it springing forward. Which is something that we can do in life as well.
The deadness of winter gives way to the beautiful Easter flowers that seem to appear overnight. The way nature suddenly bursts forth with new leaves and flower buds. Just a couple of weeks ago everything looked dead. Now as if there is still hope, new life springs forth.
Our spiritual walk can be the same way. One day we wake up and realize that we are in a dark season. It is hard to just keep moving forward. It is not that we have made a conscience decision to not follow Christ. It is not that we have even stopped doing all the things that make us strong. We still pray and read our bibles, but it feels like the ceiling is holding the prayers in and that they are not reaching God’s ears.
The darkness of spiritual attack seems to be all around us, and we wonder what is going on in our lives. Sometimes the dark places are from the enemy to distract us from our purpose. Other times God allows us to be in this dark place to bring forth new growth. We have to be able to discern the difference. If not, we could be praying against God’s plan, thinking it is an attack of the enemy. If the darkness is oppressive and makes you feel like you cannot move a muscle it is probably the enemy. God uses us being planted to grow us.
Seeds don’t die and bring forth life unless planted beneath the soil, in a warm, dark place. When the time is right, suddenly there is a speck of green pushing its way through the soil.
All the conditions had to be right in order for the seed to turn into a plant. We can only thrive and have new growth if the conditions are right. God spends a great amount of effort to make sure we have just the right conditions to bring forth new growth.
When thinking about seeds and spiritual growth the obvious comes to mind. Jesus was crucified, buried and in three days burst forth with power and the ability to produce fruit. We are that growth of his time of walking in darkness. He descended into hell and took back the power and authority that Adam gave to satan in the garden.
He came out of the grave victorious. We too can come out of our dark places of growing, with victory. In the darkness, one of two things will happen. We will either give up or we will grow. If we choose to grow, we will burst forth with new enthusiasm and be stronger. In the darkness, faith grows and we become empowered by God to keep pressing forward.
Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Just as we have different seasons of weather. We have seasons in our spiritual walk. God will put us through seasons to grow us. Some seasons are ones of darkness, where God is trying to grow us. He is trying to cause new blossoms in our lives to produce spiritual fruit.
The growing season is never easy. It takes us to be consistent even when we don’t feel like it. It takes us being intentional even when we are weary. If we can do what God has called us to do without fainting or backing off, then we will reap the fruit that can feed others.
As you look around this first day of spring at the new leaves and buds remember God is also trying to grow something in your life. We are at a new season, God is trying to wake up his church to be the church. Millions of souls hang in the balance and need us to have the fruit that God is trying to produce in us.
John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
We have to yield to the vine and draw strength from him to produce this fruit. It is not something we can do on our own. It all comes down to a relationship with Jesus. If we allow him to flow in our lives that spiritual flow is like sap in the vine, and it will produce the fruit in the branches.
Every day is a small chance to grow and bring forth new growth. Enjoy, the first day of spring, thank God for another day. Thank him for producing new fruit in your life and be encouraged, God has the final say, even when things appear to be scary, even when you find yourself in a dark place.
